The Palmetto State is a wonderful mix of old and new.  It has a rapidly growing high-tech sector, centered on advanced materials, energy, and “Silicon Harbor” in the Charleston area.  But South Carolina is also committed to preserving its historic sites and military traditions, many dating back to the American Revolution.  Although South Carolina has serious economic challenges, including poverty and loss of manufacturing jobs, especially in the textile industries, the state’s motto is still a window on its future:  “While I breathe, I hope.”
