For the U.S. military, advanced biofuels can yield big benefits to national security.

Dependence on foreign oil reduces battle readiness, in part because the transportation of service men and women requires more than 375,000 barrels of oil each day. Consequently, every $10 increase in the price of oil results in a $1.4 billion spike in Department of Defense budgets.

A long term strategy to develop advanced biofuels can help cut costs and save lives.
