Voters began casting ballots as early as 6 a.m. Eastern time today when the first polls opened. But they were hardly the first to do so in this election.
As of yesterday morning, more than 19 million ballots had been returned by mail or cast at early in-person voting locations across the country. In 2010, more than 20 percent of the electorate voted before Election Day.
In states such as Georgia and Nevada, voters cast most early ballots in person at designated early voting locations. In other states, including California and Ohio, the lion’s share of early voting occurs by mail.
