In October, Pew released the results of eight state surveys—California, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas—of public opinion on election reform and election administration. In every state, strong majorities from both parties supported arguments in favor of interstate data-sharing to keep voter registration rolls accurate and up-to-date.
The Presidential Commission on Election Administration and the Bipartisan Policy Center recommend that states participate in interstate data-sharing projects, such as the Electronic Registration Information Center.
Public support for such efforts reflects a broader trend toward approval of policies that use technology and data to improve the accuracy of government records and the efficiency of election administration. In every state surveyed, at least 55 percent of respondents supported coordination among government agencies to ensure accurate and consistent information is used for each resident for all official purposes.
