Europe is comprised of more than 50 diverse countries that are bound together by strong historic and cultural ties. Twenty eight of these states make up the European Union; 18 of them sharing a common currency, the euro. The EU has a combined population of 500 million people and is the largest economy in the world by nominal GDP. The EU has been at the forefront of environmental protection and marine conservation, although it struggles to match this with its fisheries management. Today economic crisis and increasingly complex political structures are testing decision-makers ability to deliver on their citizens’ expectations.
