New Mexico's Rio Grande del Norte is a beautifully diverse landscape, home to migratory birds, elk and deer.

Efforts are underway to safeguard 235,000 acres of this region, including the iconic Ute Mountain and part of the Rio Grande gorge. Legislation would also preserve traditional hunting, grazing, fishing and wood-gathering for local farmers and ranchers.

This episode of "This American Land" was produced in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts.
