Nuestro océano es de crucial importancia. Sus aguas, que constituyen el 70% del planeta, sustentan una gran variedad de vida marina, comunidades y puestos de trabajo. A pesar de esto, lo tratamos con muy poco respeto. Aunque ha demostrado ser resistente, el océano no pude seguir dándonos tanto. En junio, el día del 20 aniversario de la primera Cumbre de la Tierra de Río de Janeiro, líderes de todo el mundo volverán a la ciudad brasileña con motivo de la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el desarrollo sostenible (Río+20) para renovar el deseo político de promover el desarrollo sostenible. El programa de esta reunión Río+20 es amplio y ambicioso, pero ahora es el momento de dar valor al océano. Ha estado fuera de la lista de prioridades durante demasiado tiempo, y eso se nota. Los líderes pueden corregir esta tendencia para garantizar que nuestro océano pueda albergar vida marina y humana durante las próximas décadas.
