On Oct. 25, 2023, The Pew Charitable Trusts and California stakeholders responded to a request from the state’s Ocean Protection Council (OPC) for feedback on marine management measures that the state should consider when tracking progress toward protection of 30% of its lands and coastal areas by 2030.

The letter from Pew and its partners commended the state’s efforts to date, proposed criteria for determining whether existing measures fit the state’s goals, and encouraged the OPC to identify needed management policy and program improvements and provide ample opportunities for public engagement.
