Pew Urges Strengthening of Nauru’s Statement on Seabed Mining

The Pew Charitable Trusts, on behalf of the Code Project, submitted comments to the Government of Nauru urging significant strengthening of its environmental impact statement (EIS). Nauru Ocean Resources Inc., a mining company, developed the EIS and submitted it in advance of a deep-sea mining equipment test, scheduled to take place in 2022. The Code Project is a Pew-sponsored coalition of scientists, lawyers and regulatory experts brought together to analyze the International Seabed Authority’s rules governing mining activities in the deep ocean beyond national jurisdictions.
