In FY2010, the government spent $1292 billion on education-related grants and tax expenditures, obligated $878 billion in direct loans, and guaranteed another $834 billion in loans made by third party lenders
The federal government spent approximately $93.2 billion in fiscal year 2010 on grant programs that may provide a subsidy to the Education sector. This funding, administered by 25 agencies across more than 160 active programs (Table 1), accounted for approximately 11 percent of all government grants made that year ($822.6 billion).
