From a lack of interest to concerns about COVID-19, the reasons are numerous

An estimated 92% of registered voters cast ballots in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Despite COVID-19 restrictions and new mail-in voting systems, about 17 million more Americans voted in 2020 than in 2016. But what about the 8% of registered voters—some 14 million people—who didn’t turn out? The data below is courtesy of the U.S. Census Bureau.
