2012 Election Snapshots

Over the past several months, Pew collected data about the 2012 presidential election from nearly every state and the District of Columbia. We used the findings to create a snapshot of each jurisdiction, focusing on how many people voted, how long they waited to cast their ballots, how they cast them, and how many ballots were not counted. These snapshots will be released over the coming months, five at a time, and the Election Data Dispatches will take a closer look at the latest snapshots each week.

More than 180,000 provisional ballots — 8 percent of the total — were cast in Arizona last fall, the most ever issued in the state. Of these, approximately 33,000 were rejected.

As reported in Maricopa County, the state’s most populous jurisdiction, many of those who cast provisional ballots were on the state’s permanent early voter list but showed up at the polls on Election Day. In that event, state law requires those voters cast provisional ballots so officials can confirm they did not also mail in a ballot.
