Costs associated with maintaining a checking account can vary state by state. Pew collected data on the fees, terms, and conditions of the nations's 12 largest banks* by deposit volume as of October 2011. Each state is evaluated according to the banks that maintain retail operations there, with no state containing data on all 12 banks.
