Pew Works for Abundant Fish and Healthy Oceans

Holly Binns and Chad Hanson respond to a Sept. 12, 2013 column published on Tallahasee.com.

Fisherman Tom Adams writes that The Pew Charitable Trusts is among environmental groups that want to take away the public's right to fish. Nothing could be further from the truth. Rather, we strive to ensure robust fish populations to meet the needs of fishermen, tourists, seafood businesses, divers and others who depend upon our oceans.

We endeavor to balance these needs by pursuing scientifically sound policies that prevent overfishing, help depleted species recover, safeguard habitat and ensure the health of ocean food webs. There are many methods for achieving those goals, and no one-size-fits-all solution. We support allowing as much fishing as possible while still protecting marine ecosystems.
