New Shark Sanctuary in Dominican Republic to Implement CITES Obligations

Jose M. Mateo Feliz, director of biodiversity for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, announced a ban on commercial fishing, sale and trade for all shark and ray species within the country’s exclusive economic zone on November 15.

The Dominican Republic is the 16th country to protect sharks in its national waters. “We are designating the Dominican Republic’s waters safe for all sharks and rays,” Mateo Feliz said.
