Miles de kilómetros de Océano Pacífico separan a las islas que forman el Triángulo Polinésico -- con Hawaii al norte; la Isla de Pascua (Rapa Nui), al sureste;  y Nueva Zelanda (Aotearoa) al oeste.

En Abril del 2013, representantes de la Isla de Pascua y Polinesia Francesa viajaron a Nueva Zelanda para celebrar estos lazos y el deseo mutuo de proteger el Océano Pacífico.

Durante el viaje a través de Aotearoa, conocieron a líderes Maori, científicos, oficiales del gobierno, guías turísticos y ecologistas. Se discutió sobre los desafíos y beneficios de crear reservas marinas y áreas protegidas.
