Proposed Renewable Energy Rule Would Advance Safer Offshore Wind Power

Pew commends provisions intended to improve transmission planning and community engagement, protect marine ecosystems

Proposed Rule Would Advance Safer Offshore Wind Power

The Pew Charitable Trusts on April 28, 2023, submitted comments to the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in support of provisions in the proposed Renewable Energy Modernization Rule and the bureau’s efforts to advance safe and increased clean energy, particularly offshore wind projects, while protecting marine life and ecosystems.

Pew’s letter commended BOEM’s intent to release and frequently update a renewable energy leasing schedule; offer multifactor, nonmonetary bid credits to qualifying offshore wind lease applicants; and begin planning more cost-effective, shared transmission solutions that can minimize the number of turbine-to-shore lines and disturbances to the environment and coastal communities.
