The Pew Charitable Trusts wrote to the leaders of the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee on May 21, praising lawmakers’ efforts to strengthen dietary supplement oversight in the draft reauthorization of the Food and Drug Administration’s medical product user fees.
The draft legislation, released May 17, incorporates key provisions from a bill known as the Dietary Supplement Listing Act of 2022 (S. 4090), written by Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Mike Braun (R-IN). The language would significantly strengthen FDA oversight of this market by establishing a mandatory product listing requirement for all dietary supplements. Such a requirement would increase transparency and protect patients by giving the agency comprehensive and more up-to-date information about an opaque market that directly affects the health and well-being of many Americans.
