The Pew Charitable Trusts, together with the American Public Health Association, the Association for Accessible Medicines, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, and Trust for America’s Health sent letters to the chairs and ranking members of the Appropriations Committees of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as to the chairs and ranking members of the appropriations subcommittees that oversee funding for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The groups are urging the committees to support strong FDA oversight and enforcement of the 2013 Drug Quality and Security Act. They also suggested draft report language that would protect patients from potentially unsafe compounded medicines by supporting the FDA’s final guidance on the prescription requirement for compounded products. The report language acknowledges the significant progress that state boards of pharmacy and the agency have made toward a clear regulatory framework for compounded medicines.
