The State of the Arts: A Summary Overview of New York City's Nonprofit Cultural Organizations, Their Strengths and Challenges

The Alliance for the Arts has released The State of the Arts: A Summary Overview of New York City's Nonprofit Cultural Organizations, Their Strengths and Challenges, a snapshot of the New York City cultural community's strengths and weaknesses. The report relies solely on information provided by the New York State Cultural Data Project and shows that the 1,133 New York City nonprofit cultural organizations studied continue to be a major industry, raising over $3.8 billion in earned and contributed revenue annually and employing over 100,000 people.

The study also shows that these organizations were impacted by the recent economic crisis, reporting a substantial decrease in funding in 2009 over 2008. This report is the first in a series of State of the Arts reports that will use CDP data to analyze New York's arts and cultural organizations.
