The State of the News Media 2004

Declining audiences, newsroom cutbacks, changes in content, and a focus on profits rather than innovation raise serious questions about the long-term health of American journalism, according to a this first-of-its-kind study on the state of the news media in 2004. The study breaks American journalism into eight sectors--newspapers, magazines, network television, cable television, local television, the Internet, radio, and ethnic and alternative media.

The study, “The State of the American News Media,” was produced by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a research institute affiliated with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts.
