Herring Alliance Director Peter Baker of the Pew Environment Group delivered a presentation on the uncertainty in fishery management created by the at-sea dumping of unsampled catch, sometimes referred to as "slippage," at a conference in Portland, Maine on Thursday, July 23, 2009.
Included in this presentation was a three-minute animation demonstrating slippage and several other glaring loopholes in the monitoring of the Atlantic herring fishery.
The presentation took place at the 6th International Fisheries Observer and Monitoring Conference during a panel discussion on the fishery monitoring concerns of non-governmental organization.
This animation, entitled "The Tip of the Iceberg: Monitoring Loopholes in the Industrial Midwater Trawl Fishery for Atlantic Herring" was created to educate scientists, managers, fishermen and the public about troubling loopholes in the herring fishery that allow the use of sorting devices that prevent onboard observers from accurately and completely sampling bycatch, including marine mammals.
