Besides Atlantic bluefin tuna, albacore is the only species of temperate tuna managed by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). There are three genetically distinct stocks of albacore in the Atlantic: a Northern and Southern Atlantic stock (separated at 5 degrees north) and a Mediterranean stock. However, the Mediterranean stock is managed by ICCAT as a single stock together with the northern population as North Atlantic albacore. No official assessment has been made of the Mediterranean stock as a distinct population.
