The HIA was conducted to inform the 2008 Growth Policy for the City of Billings, Montana. Pathways explored included emergency preparedness, nutrition, pedestrian safety and traffic, physical activity, social capitol, safety and crime, affordable housing and living wage jobs. Health effects studied included stress, anxiety, injury, depression, lung cancer, diabetes, physical activity-related cancers, obesity, hypertension, CVD, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and fitness. The HIA recommended specific steps to expand access to healthy food, encourage physical activity and ensure public safety, including expansion of the existing trail network to foster connectivity and physical activity and implementing traffic calming measures in residential neighborhoods.

Ultimately, RiverStone Health's findings and recommendations were included in the update of the policy.
