During its 44th annual meeting Oct. 20, the Institute of Medicine announced 70 new members, including 2005 Pew biomedical scholar Gonçalo R. Abecasis. Considered to be one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, election to the IOM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
As the Felix E. Moore Collegiate Professor of Biostatistics and chair of the biostatistics department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Abecasis studies the genes involved in human diseases. Specifically, he is developing analytical methods and statistical tools that will facilitate the mapping of complex genetic traits. His applied projects focus on the genetics of aging, inherited eye diseases, inflammatory diseases, and psychiatric disorders.
"These leaders' tremendous achievements have contributed significantly to advancing health and medicine,” said IOM President Victor J. Dzau of the new members. “The expertise and knowledge they bring to the IOM will encourage and enhance its success."
