Leor Weinberger, a 2008 Pew scholar and associate investigator at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, has devised an approach to address one of the most troublesome aspects of HIV infection: the tendency of the virus to “hide” in immune cells, where it can’t be eradicated by antiretroviral drugs.
In a paper published in Science, Weinberger showed that certain compounds could reactivate latent HIV, providing a possible tool for drug discovery.
