Four major elections in just over seven months may cost New York state taxpayers more than $100 million according to recent reports. A presidential primary, primaries for federal office in June and for state and local offices in September, and the November general election cap off a very busy year for voters and officials.
State Board of Elections spokesman John Conklin estimates a general election costs a little under $50 million, adding that a primary costs about half to three-quarters of that amount.
Conservatively, that means the 2012 election cycle could cost the state at least $125 million.
