Public safety is a critical issue that affects public health, the economy, household economic advancement, and overall quality of life. Crime harms people’s physical and emotional safety while imposing a steep financial toll, including lost earnings, lower property values, reduced business and community investment, and increased criminal justice and health system costs.

In Philadelphia, Pew’s work in this area combines our local, state, and national expertise in research and policy as well as grantmaking. These efforts include consulting with local government to help strengthen its approach to reducing community violence; conducting research and analysis; and supporting nonprofits that work with the people and places at highest risk.
