Pew, Wellcome, ASM Underscore Urgent Need to Reinvigorate Antibiotic Pipeline
On June 16, 2016, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Wellcome, and the American Society for Microbiology convened a group of leading experts to explore potential next steps for advancing antibiotic discovery. After the meeting, the three organizations issued a joint statement affirming that the antibiotic pipeline is insufficient to meet current and future public health needs, and calling for a targeted effort to overcome scientific barriers to antibiotic discovery before it is too late.

barriers to drug discovery, regulatory challenges, and diminishing returns on investment have led major drug
companies to scale back or abandon their antibiotic research.
