U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged the international community to support protection of the Ross Sea, one of the most pristine marine ecosystems on Earth, at a reception hosted by The Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, DC. He spoke in the company of the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States the Right Honorable Mike Moore, and the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Bob Carr. 

In July, 24 countries and the European Union are expected to decide whether to create two marine protected areas or leave them vulnerable to large-scale fishing: the Ross Sea, proposed by the United States and New Zealand, and the East Antarctic, proposed by Australia, France, and the European Union. If created, the Ross Sea marine reserve will be the largest in the world.
