Research

Stephen Hall is a Principal at Avalerion Capital. His interests include controls on biodiversity in marine benthic systems and the effects of discard from prawn trawlers on a semi-enclosed coastal ecosystem. Hall used his Pew fellowship to analyze and advocate for useful quantitative measures of ecosystem health that can guide fisheries management. In particular, he focused on bycatch, that is, nontargeted species that are caught unintentionally. Hall and his colleagues undertook a comprehensive review of overall progress in bycatch mitigation to identify particularly successful approaches, determine the potential for bycatch reduction from existing approaches, and point out potential areas for further improvements. They reviewed the literature on “reference points,” which are specific values that can be measured and used as benchmarks for fisheries management and scientific advice.
