Online Registration Now Available to Nearly Half of Eligible Voters
With registration deadlines rapidly approaching, almost 110 million of the nation’s approximately 225 million eligible voters live in the 20 states that offer online voter registration. Availability of online registration has expanded rapidly in recent years:
- In 2012, online registration was available in 13 states and to approximately one-third of all eligible voters.
- In 2010, it was available in eight states, which were home to about 12 percent of the nation’s eligible voters.
- In 2008, online registration was offered in only two states—Arizona and Washington—accounting for just 4 percent of all eligible voters.
Several states launched online registration in 2014, including Georgia, which is also among a growing number of states offering this service on mobile devices. Other states, such as California, have recently updated their systems to provide online registration in more languages.
The following states allow online voter registration: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. Additionally four states are in the process of building online systems: Hawaii, Massachusetts, Nebraska, and West Virginia.
