PROFILE

Glen Holmes helps lead Pew’s international fisheries project, where he focuses on engagement in regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) across the Indo-Pacific, including three of the world’s five tuna RFMOs: the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, and the Convention for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna.

He has been working in the environmental field as a marine ecologist for more than 20 years. After initially training as a chemical engineer and working with environmental problems associated with both agriculture and industry, Holmes turned his attention to marine ecology. His research focused on modeling large-scale changes to tropical marine ecosystems and the development of management tools that could be used by governments with limited capacity.

Holmes previously worked as an independent environmental advisor on marine and coastal ecosystem issues undertaking projects for both government and non-government associated organizations such as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the World Bank as well as coordinated and lectured courses in environmental management at The University of Queensland.

Holmes holds a bachelor’s in engineering (chemical) and a Ph.D. in marine ecology from The University of Queensland
