PROFILE

Giuseppe Di Carlo leads the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project’s global efforts to conserve marine ecosystems, including establishing large marine protected areas, protecting biodiversity and key migratory species, and safeguarding traditional cultures linked to the sea.

Before joining Pew, Di Carlo spent 12 years with the World Wide Fund for Nature in various leadership roles, and most recently directed the Mediterranean Marine Initiative, which helps support countries in the region in achieving key conservation and management targets. He previously served as director of the Isola di Ustica Marine Reserve in Italy and worked for Conservation International as senior manager for climate change, providing support to programs in countries around the globe. Di Carlo, who is based in Rome, is fluent in Italian, English, Spanish, and French.

Di Carlo holds a bachelor’s degree in marine sciences from Queen Mary University of London and a doctorate in marine sciences from the University of Southampton. He studied and analyzed coastal marine ecosystems during postdoctoral research fellowships with the University of New Hampshire and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
