Retiree Health Benefits
Ensuring that states can provide promised coverage
Almost every state offers newly hired public workers access to certain retiree health care coverage as part of the standard benefits package. For many states, a significant gap exists between the health care benefits that these governments have promised workers and the funding to pay for them.
Multiple factors could affect reported liabilities moving forward, including future benefit changes or changes in funding policies. Other factors could be health care inflation or demographic changes that differ from current expectations.
