My research aims to unravel the gene regulatory programs that govern meiosis—the specialized cell division that results in the formation of gametes. As a postdoctoral fellow, I discovered several surprising properties of meiotic gene regulation in yeast, including meiosis-specific synthesis of proteins from a set of more than 2,500 new genes that are smaller than the size cutoff used for traditional genome analyses. These genes encode proteins that are, on average, less than one-quarter the size of the average yeast protein and the role they play in meiosis is currently not understood. I hope to identify the functions of these novel gene products by a set of genetic, biochemical, and computational approaches, including precisely altering their timing of expression and determining the effects on meiotic progression. This work will shed light on how a previously overlooked class of genes impacts a fundamental developmental process and could more broadly identify new universal principles by which proteins can function and by which genomes are decoded.
