El condado de Kern (California) es uno de los más importantes para la industria agrícola en Estados Unidos, pero también alberga altas tasas de pobreza y condiciones precarias de salud. Las áreas rurales, como Lamont, enfrentan niveles elevados de asma, de obesidad, de enfermedades cardiovasculares y de cáncer. Con el apoyo del Proyecto de Impacto en la Salud y el California Endowment, la comunidad llevó a cabo una evaluación del impacto a la salud (EIS) que aportara información para la toma de decisiones sobre el uso de la tierra y del transporte en el condado.

Por un lado, la evaluación sirvió para asegurarse de que los problemas que enfrentaban las comunidades rurales se tomaran en cuenta en el plan final del condado; por el otro, los residentes trabajaron con las autoridades pertinentes para que las recomendaciones se implementaran. En consecuencia, se han destinado USD 2 millones para crear nuevas aceras y para realizar otras mejoras peatonales en el vecindario de Lamont, lo que aumentará el transporte activo, como caminar y andar en bicicleta.
