Tom Swanson serves as a project director for the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, developing and implementing its strategic vision to protect and conserve important marine environments by increasing the number of fully protected parks in the sea from nine to 15 by 2022. Previously, Swanson served as project director for Pew’s clean energy initiative, which worked to accelerate the clean energy economy in the United States. He also managed the field portfolio for Pew’s clean energy and public lands programs in 25 states. Swanson has more than 15 years of policy and advocacy experience in environmental conservation. 

Before joining Pew in 2008, Swanson worked for the National Environmental Trust, coordinating the field operation for federal campaigns aimed at protecting public lands and increasing fuel efficiency standards.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of William & Mary and a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University’s Shar School of Policy and Government.
