Nicholas Kirkham works on Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project’s efforts to create a representative system of marine protected areas (MPAs) and improve fishing conservation measures in Antarctica’s Southern Ocean. He focuses on coordinating the on-the-ground campaign in Chile and Argentina to designate a proposed MPA along the Antarctic Peninsula. He has also led the project’s research and analysis in support of new MPA proposals in the Southern Ocean.
Before joining Pew, Kirkham published research on deep sea mining in areas beyond national exclusive economic zones and worked as a U.S. federal contractor providing environmental project support and data analysis for a groundwater remediation site.
Kirkham holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Utah State University, a master’s in marine systems and policies from the University of Edinburgh, and several United States National Environmental Policy Act certifications.
