Allan Coukell is senior director of health programs, overseeing Pew’s initiatives related to health and health care, including substance use disorder, antibiotic resistance, food safety, health IT, pharmaceuticals and other regulated technologies, and social determinants of health.

Before joining Pew, he practiced as a clinical pharmacist in oncology at the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, served as a senior medical writer and editor with the medical journal publisher Adis International, covered health and science as a reporter and producer for WBUR in Boston and Radio New Zealand, and was director of policy and strategic communications for the Prescription Project at Community Catalyst. He serves on the board of the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA, was a founding board member of the Medical Device Innovation Consortium, and is a former member of the FDA’s Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee.
