The Pew Charitable Trusts—together with fiscal conservatives, architects, engineers, insurance businesses, and public works professionals—sent a letter to congressional leaders on Jan. 9 urging stronger flood-ready requirements for all federally funded projects. The letter, signed by 28 other organizations, stresses that new construction and repairs to public infrastructure and buildings should take long-term flood risk into consideration. Given the devastation caused by hurricanes in 2017, such measures are needed more than ever to better protect businesses, communities, and homes from the costly cycle of flooding and rebuilding.
