Unauthorized immigration is on the upswing again. According to a Pew Research Center analysis of Census Bureau data, 11.7 million unauthorized immigrants lived in the United States in 2012.
That number peaked at 12.2 million in 2007, and had dropped as low as 11.3 million during the recession in 2009.
Among states, unauthorized immigration into Texas never stopped rising and the illegal population is currently pegged at 1.7 million. Florida and New Jersey saw declines during the recession, but now the tide is trending upward again. California, Illinois and New York saw fewer unauthorized immigrants during this timeframe.
All states except Texas estimate they have fewer than 1 million unauthorized immigrants.
