Support for ADAPT Act Grows

On June 3, Representatives John Shimkus (R-IL) and Gene Green (D-TX) introduced the Antibiotic Development to Advance Patient Treatment (ADAPT) Act as a stand-alone bill in the U.S. House. The legislation is designed to promote the development of much-needed antibiotics, and it mirrors similar ADAPT provisions that were included in the 21st Century Cures Act, a wide-ranging health care bill approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee on May 21.

ADAPT—along with companion legislation in the Senate, the Promise for Antibiotics and Therapeutics for Health (PATH) Act —will establish a streamlined approval pathway to help bring new antibiotics to patients with highly resistant bacterial infections that are serious or life-threatening. 

Since its introduction, a range of diverse stakeholders has expressed support for this bipartisan legislation.
