Shark Week Provides Opportunity to Highlight Sharks’ Virtues

Discovery Channel’s Shark Week doesn’t predate dinosaurs, as sharks do, but this summer marks the 27th year of the popular programming block that has become a worldwide phenomenon. Shark Week 2014 kicks off Sunday, Aug.10.

The Pew Charitable Trusts’ global shark conservation project applauds Discovery’s decision to continue to champion these animals, which are crucial to keeping our oceans healthy. Protecting sharks is much more than a week-long effort at Pew, where international policy work, building support for sanctuaries, reducing demand and overall advocacy are everyday focuses.

Take some time during this year’s Shark Week to test your shark smarts. Find out which shark species are facing population declines so great that they need immediate attention, and learn about Pew’s efforts to ensure the survival of these key predators, so vital to the health of our oceans.
