Who Uses Online Voter Registration in Maryland

A recent analysis of Maryland’s online voter registration system finds that new voters using the online system are slightly more likely to register as Republicans compared to those registering by paper.

The state rolled out its system on July 1, 2012, and through early April of this year, 49,712 people had used the system to initiate a new registration. During this same period, 197,056 individuals used the old paper system. Republicans accounted for 20.1 percent of new online registrants compared with 16.7 percent of Republicans who registered using paper.
