Research

Alan White joined the Nature Conservancy in late 2006 as a senior scientist within the global marine initiative, focusing on marine protected areas (MPAs). From 2008 through 2015 he served as the Coral Triangle program manager and as an advisor to the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security. He is currently working part time on selected Asian marine conservation projects for the conservancy and as an independent consultant. White has experience in all aspects of coastal management implementation, research, and administration, based on 30 years of fieldwork in the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia. He has undertaken studies on the management, conservation, ecology, and economics of coastal resource management systems and MPAs. White is also a founding member and president of the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc., based in Cebu City, Philippines, where he undertook his Pew fellowship project to develop an MPA monitoring and rating system in collaboration with Philippine partners. He is currently mentoring the implementation of the Coral Triangle MPA System in partnership with the six Coral Triangle countries, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Nature Conservancy, and regional partners.
