To ensure that commercial fisheries of the U.S. Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas are regulated in a way that maintains a healthy ecosystem for marine life and indigenous peoples, Pew has engaged on three fronts to advance forward-thinking, sustainable management of important fisheries resources of the Arctic.

Permanent protection for Bristol Bay

In collaboration with commercial fishing interests and indigenous Alaskans, Pew successfully worked to protect valuable ocean habitat in Bristol Bay.

Arctic Fishery Management Plan

Pew worked with partners to secure a decision by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to impose a first-of-its-kind precautionary management plan that prohibits commercial fishing north of the Bering Strait unless or until scientific research determines that such activities can be done without harming the ecosystem.

Ecosystem-based approach to managing Bering Sea fisheries
