Pew Urges FDA to Strengthen Food Safety Oversight

The Pew Charitable Trusts submitted comments Nov. 20 to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposing steps to improve its food safety oversight as part of the agency’s initiative, “A New Era of Smarter Food Safety.”

In particular, Pew encouraged the use of root cause analyses—both by the public and private sectors—to help determine the underlying reasons why a food safety event occurred. Pew also called for expanding the availability of data generated and collected by food companies while working to address any technical or legal concerns those companies may have.
