The Senate Should Modernize Flood Insurance Program

On May 18, 2021, Velma Smith of The Pew Charitable Trusts testified before the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee in support of key reforms proposed for the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which expires Sept. 30, 2021. She emphasized several key changes, including policies to help drive new development away from flood-prone areas, increase investment in mitigation, and improve the NFIP’s financial solvency.
