NJ: New law allows immigrants living in the country illegally to get New Jersey driver’s licenses
Hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents will be able to obtain a driver’s license in the state after Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law a bill expanding the privileges.
GA: 22K reinstated to voting rolls as Georgia attorneys defend purge
The Georgia secretary of state’s office announced it would reinstate about 22,000 voters that it had removed from the rolls. The announcement came two hours before state attorneys returned to federal court to defend the cancellation of more than 300,000 voter registrations.
OK: Oklahoma will continue to resettle refugees, governor tells Trump administration
Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican, agreed to continue allowing refugees to settle in Oklahoma next year under a new presidential directive that allows cities and states to bar refugees. In a three-sentence letter to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Stitt said refugees will continue to be accepted in Oklahoma.
UT: Utah governor signs tax bill
Republican Gov. Gary Herbert announced that he has signed legislation changing Utah’s tax code that was recently approved by lawmakers in a special session. The bill cuts overall taxes by roughly $160 million net through a combination of decreased income taxes and increased sales taxes.
CA: Californians can now check legal pot dealers using QR codes
California marijuana users can now turn to their smartphones to find out if a dispensary is legit. The Bureau of Cannabis Control announced a program encouraging licensed cannabis retailers to post QR codes in their store windows. The checkerboard codes can be scanned by a cellphone camera linking the reader to the license bureau online.
WI: Wisconsin TV station sues governor for refusing to release his emails
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, is facing another lawsuit over transparency within his administration, this time over his refusal to release emails. Milwaukee TV news station FOX6 is suing the governor after he refused to release a day’s worth of emails, saying the reporter’s request was not limited to emails about a specific subject matter.
WY: Wyoming governor backs probe into state’s leading utility
Gov. Mark Gordon, a Republican, plans to allocate additional resources to the Wyoming Public Service Commission to bolster an investigation into an energy plan published by the state’s largest utility.
NY: New York governor wants to codify net neutrality standards
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, plans to introduce legislation that would codify a wide array of net neutrality standards, which dictate that internet providers cannot speed up services for certain sites or apps that may benefit them.
WV: West Virginia governor will use .1M from contingency fund to keep commuter trains running
Before the action by Republican Gov. Jim Justice, rail service connecting three West Virginia cities with Washington, D.C., had been in doubt after the legislature appropriated only $1.2 million of the $3.2 million Maryland requested to offset the costs of operating six trains daily from West Virginia.
GA, SC, FL: Georgia governor: Gang members should move to Florida or South Carolina
Georgia’s governor said gang members should pack up and move to South Carolina or Florida, according to a video. Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, said: “My message to any gang member in this area or anywhere in the State of Georgia: You should move to Florida or South Carolina.”
VA: Virginia has .5B deal to expand rail service between Richmond and D.C.
Trains will run almost every hour between Washington and Richmond within 10 years under a deal between Virginia and CSX Corp. that will open the gateway for expanded rail service in the region and other parts of the state.
